Diamonds: An Introduction

This post is a basic overview of diamond knowledge:

The 4 Cs of Diamonds

In the diamond industry, diamonds are viewed through 4 main characteristics (Cut, Clarity, Colour and Carat). These characteristics should all be considered when purchasing diamonds, as these are how diamonds are “graded and categorized."

Cut:

- Considered the most important detail.
- Most individuals say that the rareness in look of the diamond depends on its cut.
- The size of your lady's ring finger should be taken into consideration.
- The cut of a diamond can reveal the individual's style, taste and even personality!

For example:

- Round cut is associated with a "traditional" individual.
- Emerald cut is associated with a sophistication socialite individual.
- Pear cut is associated with a traditional, but edgy individual.
- Marquise cut is associated with "The Old Hollywood" individual

It is always a good idea to take a look at the style of rings your partner wears casually. If your partner has siblings or a very close friend, ask them!

Clarity:

- Diamonds, like all natural stones, contain flaws or impurities. These occur during the formation process of the mineral.
- The visibility, number and size of these flaws determines clarity.
- Clear diamonds show little to no impurities and therefore are highly valued and priced. This is not to say that you should always purchase a completely flawless diamond - especially if its not in your budget.
- Now, do not be blinded by the light! You do not want to start off your marriage in debt.

Colour:

- Colour for diamonds refers to how they reflect in light.
- Colourless diamonds sparkle; while off white diamonds absorb more light, creating less shine.
- Pick what fits your partner's style!

Carat

- A carat refers to the weight of a diamond.
- Since large  diamonds are harder to find, they increase in price.
- Keep in mind your partner's hand/finger size.
- Keep in mind that the carat DOES NOT reflect your love for your partner.
